Kricket the Hairless Rat - Sculpture by nEVEr-mor Kricket the Hairless Rat - Sculpture by nEVEr-mor
So this is the first large rat sculpture that I have shipped aaaaand I am sorry to say he did not fair well through the shipping process at all.
I did spent a lot of time making him though so I still want to share him with you. We can just say that this is the "prototype" of the AMAZING sculpture that I will be making of Kricket in the future!

I have plans to improve on the structural sturdiness of certain parts of the armature and I plan on obscenely wrapping in bubble wrap for shipping. I am very interested in know how to best ship sculptures though, so advise is welcome.

In the end I did learn a lot making this guy and I hope to continually improve.

Materials used: aluminum foil. wire. glass beads. polymer clay. acrylic paint. pearl ex powder. fishing line. wool.

Resculpted...

Your sculptures are fantastic! How do you get the skin color and translucency so accurate? I also sculpt Rats and Rat pups and I'm having a hard time getting the skin down. Would you mind messaging me back on my facebook page "Marikas Miniatures"? It would mean a lot! I love your work! Thanks so much in advanced!

I am currently practicing making some, then I will see if I can ship them safely. I do not feel comfortable asking payments for something I do not feel confident will arrive in one piece. If all goes well with those then I will go ahead with commissions for my life sized rats sculptures. =]

That's amazing, it looks like my hairless rat, Sugar who passed on in 2004. She was my heart rat and I had her cremated she meant so much to me. How much do you charge for these sculptures?

Rats are one of my most favorite animals, but when I was little I was obsessed with Llamas, Sheep and Bunnies. I even tried getting my mom to let me have a llama (This was like when I was 4-5), she asked me where I would keep it, and I said the Bathtub :giggle:

Hee hee, picturing a llama in the bathtub makes me super happy! :giggle:
I grew up with sheep and a couple of large breed rabbits so I have a small bit of love for them too. XD

Oh lucky! :D
I remember that I had a stuffed bunny, a stuffed Llama, and a stuffed Lamb, when I was little too, so that's probably part of what got me so interested in them :D

I have watched one episode a while back. In my childhood, though, I loved the original my little pony.  I had collected many my little ponies and even my sheets were covered in them. :D

1) Super sculpey original on this sculpture but I do also use super sculpey firm and premo! sculpey. As far as I know you could use fimo too. Though different brands have different qualities to 'em.
2) www.dickblick.com/products/jac…
3) Perhaps ask me a more specific question. I have learned a lot in the year and half that I have been working with polymer clay and I am happy to share. I just don't know where to start. :D

He looks so gentle, with unguarded eyes and a little bit of fluff to top it off. Well done on this piece and hopefully it will survive the post next time. I recommend as well as someone else here to place your sculptures in a second box and add extra padding to the areas where it would most likely get damaged. Bubble wrap is the way to go here. Old newspapers can also be helpful if you want some more support :).

I look forward to seeing more your works!

I would like to advise you that you should use thicker wire and some Apoxie sculpt [link]. Use that stuff on joints or, use the super sculpey firm (the gray clay) on them. I use that and I made a charm with it and the thing didn't break! Quite strong but It's really hard to make it soft however.

Thank you so much for your advise! I have started using apoxie and I find it quite strong. I was using aluminum wire aswell but have now started to use steel.
Hopefully this combined with my newly learned shipping methods I will successfully send my sculptures out into the world. ^^

This is absolutely phenomenal! I can hardly even tell that it's a sculpture it looks so real!

How many hours did this take you to sculpt?
